STEM Grant Program
Science - Technology - Engineering - Math
The Optimist Club of Huntsville initiated a program to further STEM education in the schools of Huntsville and Madison County. Our Club has budgeted a total of $16,000 for this purpose, with the individual award maximum per school of $1,000. The STEM Committee will determine the size and amount of the awards based on the entries received. The competition is again expected to be fierce this year, so get your applications in early and ahead of the deadline.
Beginning in early October, a letter is sent to all schools in Huntsville, Madison City, and Madison County schools with the application form. At that point we will be accepting applications for grants from classes or clubs engaged in STEM education or educational projects. We are place few restrictions on the intended use of the grants, so long as STEM education is the focus. We will consider such proposed uses as hardware, software, books, and travel expenses. Applications need to be received by December 1st of each year.
The STEM Committee will make its initial selections based entirely on the application submitted. Once selected, we will ask the finalists to make a presentation to the STEM Committee and then we will make the final decisions. We believe this will be beneficial to the students as well as providing an opportunity for the committee to better evaluate the intended use of the grant.

Girls Engaged in Math and Science (GEMS)
GEMS is a program that encourages girls to explore STEM careers and helps bridge the gender gap in STEM. Through hands-on activities girls are inspired to learn and lead. Each spring, the state department hosts an expo for students to showcase a project.
The Optimist Club of Huntsville provided a grant to Columbia Elementary School to support their GEMS program. We received this lovely note from them:
The Columbia Elementary GEMS Club would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to the Optimist Club of Huntsville for your continued support and partnership!
Because of your generosity, our girls were able to complete their beautifully decorated, lighted dollhouses and prepare for our upcoming Expo next Wednesday, March 4, at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. We are so excited for them to showcase their creativity, problem-solving skills, and hard work!
In the photos and videos we’re sharing, you’ll see many of the supplies purchased through this year’s grant, as well as the ChompSaws funded by last year’s grant. Your investment in our students provides hands-on opportunities that spark confidence, creativity, and a love for STEM.
We are truly grateful for your partnership and your belief in our girls. Thank you for making experiences like this possible — we appreciate you more than you know!
