VOL. 61, No. 46, September 6, 2007

President Sidney Sandridge gave the invocation today and led the club in the pledge of allegiance. Sidney announced that the Installation of Officers and Board Members for the 2007/2008 Optimist year is scheduled for the Optimist Recreation Center (ORC) on Thurs., Oct. 4 at 6:00 pm. Arrangements have been made for a good motivational speaker for that occasion, so Sidney would like to see many guests. We've had a great year of achievement and fellowship under Pres. Sandridge, so let's sip cider with him once more -- and, also, get the new administration under the leadership of Connie Gipson off to a rousing start!

Lt. Gov. Duarte thanked those who attended the Randolph JOOI Club's installation of officers. The school Principal showed a lot of interest in the organization, as did many potential student members. A similar event is being planned for the Sparkman JOOI Club.

Alberto reminded us of the pancake breakfast we're sponsoring on Sat., Sept. 29, 7:30 -- 11:30 at the Central Presbyterian Church. He's getting a supply of tickets to Randolph, Sparkman, the Hawthorne Conservatory (the recipient) and the Church to help in sales. Club members should already have 10 tickets each. Jeff can furnish anyone with more as required. George Ferrell has produced some advertising for the breakfast and is attempting wide distribution. Gov. Casteel recognized Perry Law for contributing to the dime-a-day program to support Optimist International's scholarships.

Jeff Klimek introduced today's speaker, Bob Labbe, who was well known to the audience from his extensive TV and radio work. He is proud of his current "Reeling in the Years" airing on public radio (89.3 FM) each Fri. from 9:00 pm to 1:00 am where he plays 45 rpm records from his vast library. He also has broad experience garnered from refereeing basketball and football games. Two interesting sports experiences he cited were his one-on-one interview with Bear Bryant, and his exchanging staged fisticuffs with Mohammed Ali, that are preserved on TV. As SportsMed's public relations representative he acts in a motivating role within all facets of the organization, and as an interface to the community. The speaker brought 4 SportsMed T-shirt door prizes which went to Klimek, Ferrell, Gipson and Shoemaker. It was good to have Jerry at today's meeting. Bill Clarke won the attendance prize.
