VOL. 61, No. 35, June 14, 2007

Pres.-Elect Connie Gipson was in charge today. Pres. Sidney Sandridge had an appointment with his doctor. Connie greeted our guests: George Merritt and David Chandler of Huntsville's Noon Optimist Club ate with us today. Al Renz, our PGI chairman, will speak on that subject at their meeting July 10 at the Heritage Club. I plan to attend that meeting, and if we have 3 others our club will get credit for an interclub visit as we strive to be the District's leading club. Another visitor today, who assisted our speaker, was Connie's guest - Ryan Moore. Nelson Peddycoart met with us again today. Al Renz said Nelson plans to cast his lot with our club, bolstering the mafia element.

Connie announced that our club has submitted a very professionally compiled description of our qualifications for the Chamber of Commerce competition for the community's most outstanding not-for-profit organization - the winner to be revealed at the Chamber's August meeting: Our Board authorized representation at this meeting by our Pres., Pres.-Elect , Gov. and Lt. Gov. Alberto reminded us that the District Convention will be in Huntsville in August, and he needs several volunteers to make this meeting successful.

Connie introduced our speaker Dr. John Piccirillo who is a part-time instructor at UAH. He told us about student designed, balloon launched, science experiments. The payloads are limited to 12 pounds. They rise linearly for more than an hour till the balloon bursts, and then the instrument package parachutes back to earth where recovery is sometimes interesting. This popular activity takes place most Saturday mornings.

It was great to have a well-functioning public address system today. I understand Gov. Tom is responsible, and from now on we can expect to hear all our speakers clearly. Thanks, Tom! Clyde won the money. Note that there's a change in the program for our meeting on the 28th. Huntsville's Long Range City Planner will be our speaker. With BRAC soon to invade Huntsville this promises to be a timely and interesting program - a good one to invite a guest to. It's time to start thinking about July programs. I may be wrong, but I think Zack is arranging these.
