VOL. 61, No. 10, December 14, 2006

Optimism was much in evidence at today's meeting. About 45 were in attendance, our largest crowd in some time; an extra table had to be set up; there were many guests; the fellowship seemed to reflect the season; Gov. Casteel announced the forming of a new club in Montgomery was just about complete; Al Renz reported that the Sparkman Junior Mafia Club, i.e., JOOI Club now has 25 signed-up members; and our speaker later continued on this optimistic note with her program of experiences while growing up in an orphanage.

Zack Thompson installed Clayton Hanna as our newest member, presented him with a new-member kit, and had sponsor Harold Wright attach the Optimist pin to Clayton's lapel.

Alberto had several guests from Colombia: his sister, Betty; her husband, Javier; and Javier's mother, Anita. Why couldn't we organize a club in that country? We seem to have many contacts, and it would certainly get the attention of Optimist -International.

Byrom's guest today was Nicole Hill, a highly credentialized professional counselor.

Duane introduced today's speaker, Mildred Holmes, who told us about her book "Poor Orphan Trash." The book describes many instances of overcoming extreme poverty in her early years, and from her excellent presentation today character was obviously developed into her life as a result. Charlie Lyle arranged this program, but was unable to be with us today. His son is still in the hospital following his severe accident. Keep Charlie and his family in your good thoughts. Charlie hopes to be back with us next week for our business meeting at the Optimist Recreation Center. Pres. Sidney said the business session will include the election of a Huntsville Optimist Foundation board member. Paul Fowler's 3-year term expires 12/31, and he can be re-elected or a new member named. For those on our Club Board, note that the Jan. Board meeting will be on Jan. 9. Byrom Goodwin is program chairman for January and he has all programs locked in. I'm confident we'll have some interesting speakers. Marcy McFarlin will discuss a drug-free community, especially regarding illicit substance use in Madison County. Dr. Huckaby plans a motivational talk on Optimism.
