VOL. 60, No. 44, September 7, 2006

We had a good turnout of our regular 25 to 30 today with Will Dawes presiding. Will called on Sidney Sandridge to lead us in prayer and the pledge of allegiance. Two potential Harvest mafia guests were introduced: Perry Law and Tom Snow. Both would make fine members.

Will reported that ticket sales for the Sept. 16 pancake breakfast were going well. Recall the proceeds are ear-marked for the Hawthorne Conservatory in honor of Jeff Smith. Will added that Jeff's daughter, Nancy, from South Alabama will be in town and has agreed to sell 100 tickets. Connie Gipson is handling tickets. Give her checks and cash from sold tickets, and she can supply you with more to sell. No report-this-week on Fred Binner. Duane was unable to contact him. John Burns has received a stent and is back working. When he has a chance to work through his backload he'll be back with, us. Alberto is starting the development of a Jr. Optimist (JOOI) Club at Sparkman High and has set a first meeting date. Contact Alberto if you'd like to work on this project. Direct contact with young students is what our motto is all about. Matt Hancock expects to be a new father next week. Congratulations in advance!

Our speaker today was one of our past presidents, Gay Pepper. She opened our eyes to the various scams and identity thefts that are currently active in Huntsville, Alabama. If you write checks and put them in your home mail box there is a definite risk that bad things could happen. Electronic transfer of funds is recommended. Any receipts showing your credit card number should be shredded before disposal. Never give out your social security number. Gay gave us toll-free numbers to call for annual free personal credit reports. Always balance your checkbook monthly to pick up any irregularities early. Several other good tips and cautions were presented. It was a very timely and well-organized program. Thanks Gay.

Next week's program is also being arranged by Gay. It will be about Hospice and is entitled "Myth Busters". Joe Pullen won the attendance prize today.
