VOL. 60, No. 41, August 17, 2006

One of the purposes of Optimist International is, "To promote an active interest in good government and civic affairs". Someone once said, "All politics are local". The election on Tuesday 8/22 offers us a chance to exercise our obligations and responsibility.

Our monthly business meeting today at the ORC featured tasty food by Plank. We had a magnetic levitation researcher from UAH as Zack's guest. About 25 were in attendance

Pres. Will said that our club board is studying a possible increase in dues, and will have a recommendation for the club to vote on at the Sept. 21 business meeting. Will also reminded us of the pancake breakfast fund raiser to benefit the Hawthorne Conservatory to be held at the Central Presbyterian Church (corner of Randolph and Lincoln streets) on Sat. Sept. 16, 7:30 - 11:30 am. He said Currie Systems who print our weekly bulletin will once again print the tickets free of charge. Hopefully, pancake mix and sausages will be procured at cost or below.

Let's all get behind Will and recruit 7 new members between now and Sept. 30. This is what is needed to show a net gain for his year at the helm. We have some good programs coming up so please seriously consider inviting a guest or 2 to hear Jerry Thomas from the Talladega School of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing on 8 / 24, and Brian LeComple who will speak on the Fair Tax Act on 8 / 31.

Duane noted that we have no line item in the budget for our Randolph Jr. Optimist Club. This is a vibrant organization and Duane feels we should support them financially. Duane felt $300 to $500 would be appropriate. Howard Wright volunteered that Bill Heard Chevrolet would be delighted to cover this expense. Thanks Howard!

If anyone knows where to locate a key to the glassed-in trophy case in our ORC meeting room please call Will Dawes and leave him a message.

Who has programs for 9 / 7 and 9 / 14?   If anyone takes band instruments to distribute to schools please write your name on the yellow tag along with the school name and get the tags to Bill Clarke
