VOL. 60, No. 27, May 4, 2006

I understand our Respect for Law program held on May 1st was highly successful. It has been passed on to me to note the awesome work on the part of Dave Schultz and his wife Susan in preparing the room for the event. Thanks for your dedicated service.

Al Renz and I attended the Westlawn and Huntsville Middle School band concerts this week, and presented a plaque at each school to an individual player for their demonstration of spirit, leadership, character, teamwork, and optimism, as well as musicianship excellence. Al made the presentation at each school in a way that built suspense, climaxing in a loud spontaneous cheer when the winner's name was revealed in each case. Then I followed by presenting the updated bandroom plaque to the band director along with a $100 check for band expenses. At Westlawn a quartet of police officers in full uniform sang several spirituals as an added feature to their concert. Also Topper. Birney (school board) spoke briefly, complimenting Westlawn on their fine musical program. Afterwards, Topper asked us if we were from John Shirey's Optimist Club. What a compliment to John! Speaking of Shirey, John reported that a young trumpeter, carrying his instrument, approached him after the Challenger concert and thanked him for providing a trumpet for his use this year. John patted him on the back and told him to keep up the good work. This is what our band instrument program is all about.

There is still an opportunity to attend a middle school band concert. See the calendar below. This week's speaker is probably going to be Terry Davis who is running for Supt. of County Schools - presently held by our own Ray Swaim, who is stepping down. On the 18th Carleton Cove has offered to feed us at their location (directions next week).. The Club Business Meeting is moved to the 25th.
