VOL. 60, No. 19, March 9, 2006

Despite the stormy weather, we conducted what promises to be a very successful NOW (New Optimists Wanted) Banquet at the Downtown Holiday Inn this evening. President Will Dawes was master of ceremonies and he warmly welcomed all attendees. Sec. /Tress. Jeff Klimek gave the invocation followed by everyone joining in the pledge of allegiance to our flag. About 35 to 40 were present - several being prospective new members.

After a delicious buffet meal Pres. Will introduced all our guests. He made no bones about why people were invited - we need new members. Will called on several of us to say a few words about Optimist activities. He recognized Carl and George, again, for their long years of service; going back to a time when we met in the Blue Room of the Russel Erskine Hotel. Clyde gave some Community Service examples. Bill Clarke described our middle school Band Instrument Program ,, which is unique to our club. Will discussed fund raising being planned by Brad Sanford who was not able to attend tonight. Fabiani Duarte told of his role in organizing and helping to grow the ROC (Randolph Optimist Club), a junior club that we support.

Torn Casteel, our Alabama/ Mississippi Governor-Elect (and a member of our club) touched briefly on the history of Optimist International, and how we will have our first female OI President 2 years from now. Will reported that Connie's Oratorical Contest was a big success last Saturday. He also thanked Byrom for the well-run Essay Contest this year. Duane described, briefly, the PGI (personal growth and involvement) 10-step program of achievement available to members. Then Duane installed our 3 newest members: Sharon Allen, Al Renz and Howard Wright. Our keynote speaker was Mary Flynn, Executive Director of the Hawthorne Conservatory of Music. She gave a very inspiring talk that fit in perfectly with our "Friend of Youth" motto. What a joy and privilege it must be to learn music in the atmosphere she has created!

The ORC is located on Oakwood Ave, near the intersection of Oakwood and Andrew Jackson Way.
