VOL. 59, No. 32, Jun 9, 2005

Alberto got the troop rounded up promptly at 11:45 to get the luncheon rolling. It was so good to see Hershel Bingham and Tom Sloan back with us today. It was also special to get to hear our Chaplain's most heartfelt blessing. We then recited the pledge and started our feast. It was reported that Duane Williamson was still in a little pain, but his headaches have subsided, Barney Gamble is getting along better and Will Sanderson was visited at Valley View Rehabilitation. Please remember to keep all of these members and our servicemen and women in our prayers.

Following our lunch, Alberto went around the room and introduced our guests. Mitchell Klimek, Francisco Himenez and Joshua Rensas were all visiting today. Please remember anyone is welcome to visit each week. Thanks to all who invited a guest.

On to our "Moments in History." Today we learned that Peter the Great was born in 1672 and Cole Porter came into this world on this date in 1891. In 1865 Andrew Johnson moved into the White House nearly two months after the death of Abraham Lincoln. In 1902, Woodrow Wilson was elected president of Princeton University. This is where we also learned that President Wilson was and still is the only American president to have earned a doctorate degree. Finally, Secretariat won the Triple Crown in 1973.

Zach Thompson challenged everyone to give to the Jeff Smith Foundation by promising to match $1 for $1 each donation given from now until the meeting in two weeks. Thanks Zach for your generosity. Alberto reminded all committee chairs to get their books together. Fred Binner surprised us all today with his patriotism by giving each member present a pen that resembles Old Glory. Thank you Fred for your enthusiasm and patriotic flare!

Connie Gibson introduced Huntsville City Engineer Tom Cunningham as our speaker. Tom had a presentation of projects and traffic calmers throughout the city. I found out real quick why I didn't major in engineering. He answered some tough and fair questions from our audience about traffic circles and round-abouts. Thank to Connie for getting such a fine program.

Remember next week is the business meeting at Optimist Park. Please come and learn about our club's status.

Dick Daugherty won the attendance prize. We recited the creed and were adjourned.
