VOL. 59, No. 29, May 19, 2005

Alberto got today's business lunch and meeting underway at the Optimist Center on time. After the prayer, led by Jeff Klimek and the pledge of allegiance, we enjoyed Bar-B-Q provided by Gay Pepper. After an enjoyable round of fellowship and food, the meeting was called to order. Alberto thanked Clyde Nevins for his ingenuity in concocting a new holder for our banner. It is always good to have a jack-of-all-trades around to help you out.

Next up, our weekly moment in history: Someone, who I couldn't pronounce his name, was born in 1890, movie writer Frank Capra was born in 1897 and in 1925 Malcolm X was born. In 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted causing 57 deaths and monumental destruction to Washington State. Lastly, Lawrence of Arabia died in 1935.

****REMEMBER NEXT WEEK'S MEETING****

The Randolph Optimist Club, led by Fabiani Duarte, will be in attendance next week to give us an update of their year. Also, Connie Gibson will be awarding our essay winners. Everyone please put next Thursday, May 26th on your calendars and plan to attend this special meeting. We are expecting a big crowd.

During this month's board meeting, the Respect for Law Banquet was discussed along with the district meeting. Alberto attended Sparkman High School's award banquet and presented our old friend Jesse Woods one of his many awards. Jesse has scholarship offers from many places around the country. Let's all wish Jesse good luck in his future endeavors. He is really a talented young man. We then discussed the foundation meeting and have gotten everything worked out for the Jeff Smith presentation and have approved some more funds for community service projects and programming. Remember anyone of us can attend a foundation meeting or a board of directors meeting at any time.

We then went around the room and got updates from all of our committees. Most were up to speed. We would like to thank James Overbeek for his hard work involving the band committee. Your time is very much appreciated. The marketing and advertising committee has our new brochure out. Please be sure to check it out. Will Dawes brought up the essay contest intended for the hard of hearing. We voted to get more info and support this cause if possible.

We then recited our creed and were adjourned.

See you next week at our special meeting at the Holiday Inn Select (Hilton)!
