VOL. 61, No. 14, January 18, 2007

Sidney Sandridge presided over today's business meeting at the Optimist Recreation Center. Chaplain Burns led us in prayer and the pledge of allegiance. Secretary/ Treasurer Jeff Klimek presented the monthly business report which was approved. We're fortunate to have our financial matters organized in such a professional manner. Jeff's new business telephone 'is his cell phone for the time being 503-8597. He has resigned from Premier Bank.

Ray Swaim was elected to the Huntsville Optimist Foundation Board. Bob Martin's community outreach committee is about to send out forms to several charitable organizations so that they can request grants from us, supplying the information we require in order not to violate the tax-exe status we enjoy. John Shirey asked that band committee members contact the band directors and pick up any instruments not being used.

Clyde Nevins is expecting a plethora of essays in response to his call to several schools. He is working with Lt. Gov. Alberto Duarte to see if other clubs in the Zone could use some of these essays. Connie has set Saturday morning Feb. 24 for our Oratorical Contest. The Renasant Bank on Balmoral Drive has agreed to let us use their room again. On the following Saturday, Mar. 3, the Zone contest will be held at the same place.

Lt. Gov. Alberto will head up the Respect for Law program this year. He plans a Zone-wide banquet to be held at the Mayfair Church of Christ May 7, 6:30 pm. In resonse to his inquiry about a suitable speaker for the occasion Zack agreed to talk to his friend Troy King, Alabama's Attorney General, to be the keynote speaker. This would certainly be a plum for Optimism in our area, and would get wide coverage by the press.

Al Renz reports that another member will soon move up one level in the PGI program. Furthermore, Al reports that the club is in good shape pointswise in District competition, mainly due to organizing the Sparkman JOOI Club. Alberto has the vision of organizing many more JOOI Clubs. He has already initiated talks with several school principals. Ray Swaim agreed to help Alberto on this project. That's 2 new jobs Ray picked up today. Gov. Casteel expressed his appreciation for the good support our club is giving him.

Our program this week will feature Dr. John Ennis, retired dermatologist, who will speak on the subject "Wilderness First Aid." Byrom has brought us excellent programs during January. Gay Pepper will be arranging our February Programs.
