VOL. 61, No. 4, October 26, 2006

We had about 30 in attendance today. Pres. Sidney Sandridge called on Gov. Tom Casteel to give the blessing and lead the pledge. Then Tom recognized former Gov. Zack Thompson for achieving Level 7 in our PGI (personal growth and involvement) Program. A framed certificate is being prepared for Zack and will be presented to him by the OI representative attending the Mobile District Meeting. Congratulations, Zack!

Al Castelli is planning our Christmas Party. It will, be either the 1st or 2nd Thursday in December. He's seeing what can be arranged at the new Embassy Suites. For info to new members, your regular dues takes care of your meal - any guests' meals will be charged to you.

Duane indoctrinated Perry Law and Rick Davis into membership with new member kits and lapel pins. Welcome aboard, guys! Duane also reported that Glen Smith has achieved PGI Level 1.

Our speaker today was one of our own mafia members, Sheriff Blake Doming. Duane introduced him. It was good to have a public address system operational today, since the regular dining room adjoining our room was quite noisy. Sheriff Doming described the many activities he is responsible for. Homeland Security grants have allowed Madison County to become the 10-county center, employing the latest technology in fighting crime.

PGI Chairman Al Renz showed a chart summarizing the progress we made last year, and his goals for the current Optimist year. Be ready to move up at least one level this year.

Ralph Caneer, Pres. Of the HOF (Huntsville Optimist Foundation) has called a meeting for Wed., Nov. 1, 4:00 pm in Paul Fowler's office in the Coca-Cola building across from the North Hall. Anyone interested in knowing what goes on at HOF meetings is invited to attend. HOF's quarterly meeting with Regions will be held Wed., Nov. 15, 4:00 pm at Regions Trust Dept. on Gallatin Street. This, too, is open to any member.

Program Chairman Duane has a real treat in store for us this week on the 2nd of Nov. Charles Wiley will be our speaker. Mr. Wiley has given over 5,000 lectures in all 50 states and 5 continents. He has appeared on CNN's popular Crossfire.

This is a great opportunity to bring a guest to what promises to be an outstanding event. Harold Wright missed out on the attendance prize, but was present.
