VOL. 60, No. 38, July 27, 2006

President Will Dawes presided today. Alberto Duarte gave the invocation and led the pledge of allegiance. Fabiani Duarte, sporting his new Commodore shirt, was a guest. Former president Charlie Lyle, recently a guest of Joe Pullen, was present again today and said he has decided to re-up. Welcome back Charlie!. Also, new member Glen Smith; sponsored by Al Renz, was introduced as the latest addition to the Harvest mafia. Since Glen is pardons and parole officer it gives one comfort to know that bunch will be watched closely.

Carol Forbes from the YMCA was our speaker today. She is director of aquatics, and is new to Huntsville. She thanked us for the community service grant the club recently gave to the Y, and told us a little about their plans. It was good to learn that Camp Chalakee (sp?), managed out of Atlanta for a few years, will return to Huntsville control in '08. Plans call for increased emphasis on Special Needs Kids at the camp.

I had to leave the meeting early, but I understand that Will again passed around the "Pennies for Childhood Cancer" bucket. I guess this has become a tradition. The rule is that if you are wearing your Optimist lapel button you are only expected to contribute the pennies you are carrying. Otherwise, you are relieved of all your change. It was reported that Al Renz will conduct a training course about parliamentary procedures to be held at the ORC (Optimist Recreation Center) Tuesday, August 8 starting at 5:30 pm. Ed Clark's wife Dorothy will undergo an operation in August. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.

It looks like well have some interesting programs in August arranged by Duane Plank -- mostly at the DHI (Downtown Holiday Inn). Think about inviting guests. I don't know when the Board Meeting is scheduled.
