VOL. 60, No. 20, March 16, 2006

We had about 25 for today's business meeting at the ORC. It was good to have Jerry Shoemaker in attendance. Jerry now resides at Orange Beach, and reported that they're making good progress in overcoming the Katrina damage.

President Will asked if anyone had seen Al Castelli. Zack said Al is making steady progress at Redstone Village. Will then said that our ORC room will not be available for our 3rd Thursday business meeting in April. A regional 4-H meeting will be using all the ORC facilities on that date. It looks like we might visit the Carleton Cove Retirement Home on that occasion. They have invited us to eat there free of charge. Clyde will be making the arrangements. Next week Buddy Beck will have two speakers, Betty Gottler and Grace Duell, from the Alabama CoOp Extension Service to tell us about the 4-H meeting. Our club has been invited to participate by having a booth to publicize -our programs.

Byrom was thanked again for his fine work on the recent Essay Contest. Connie told us about our successful Oratorical Contest, and about one girl and one boy advancing to the zone contest. Lt. Gov. Ed Clark said our boy won at the zone level and will next compete in the North Alabama regionals next month. A win there would make him a finalist for the District Scholarship prize.

Duane Plank is confident that we'll be getting 7 new members as a result of our NOW Banquet. Community Service chairman Buddy Beck said he has received 16 requests for grant money with several more expected. The club has earmarked $20,000 to support Community Service.

Heard on the grapevine - the Ed Clarks and the Tom Casteels are new grandparents. Congratulations! We closed the meeting as always by proudly reciting the Optimist Creed. It sounds like most members have committed this to memory.
