VOL. 59, No. 36, Jul 7, 2005

The meeting at the Holiday Inn was called to order today with Alberto Duarte back at the helm after arriving safely back in town from Lincoln, Nebraska. It was reported that Duane Williamson was at home. Keep Duane in your prayers. Hershel then so eloquently led the blessing and the pledge of allegiance to the flag. We then feasted on Holiday Inn Select buffet and enjoyed the food even though our table situation was a little out of whack.

Alberto then rang the bell and called the meeting to order. Guests were then introduced. They were Sherry Jennings of NASA, Dorothy Singleton and Nathan Schuler of the Boys and Girls Club, Linda and her daughter Michelle, Duane's lovely wife, Elaine and very special guest and new member Sheriff Blake Dorning. Welcome Blake! Everybody better behave now!

Our moment of history included the births of Gustav Mahler in 1860, Marc Chagall in 1887, Pierre Cardin in 1922 and Ringo Starr in 1940. In 1981, Sandra Day O'Connor was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court. Ironically, she just announced her retirement.

Grant Committee Chairman Clyde Nevins presented a check to Dorothy Singleton of The Sparkman Homes Boys and Girls Club. Dorothy was very appreciative. Our last NOW banquet is scheduled for August 25th. Please start thinking of names of friends, relatives or acquaintances for prospective membership.

July program chairman, Duane Plank, introduced our speaker, Jeff Thompson. Jeff is the Senior Business Advisor of Economic Development at UAH. Jeff spoke about what his office does on a daily basis at UAH. He says the three keys to economic growth and development is recruitment, work with existing companies to help grow and work with entrepreneurs with the innovative companies through town. Thanks Jeff for the fine program!

Byrom Goodwin won the attendance prize. We recited the creed and were adjourned.
