VOL. 59, No. 35, Jun 30, 2005

We met at the Holiday Inn today with President Alberto Duarte in charge, back from his trip to Nebraska with Fabiani. He asked for a report on our ailing members, and then called on Hershell for the prayer and the pledge. There were 27 in attendance today, including one guest, Cathy, introduced by Tom Casteel.

The Duartes' trip to Lincoln, NE was to participate in the 75th International Thespian Festival. Alberto said it was a fantastic week of culture and good food. For his work as chairman of the International Thespian Officers Fabiani was highly acclaimed. Alberto said he thought of us last week on Thurs. and, in a way, missed us. We told him we missed his "Moment of History". He had it ready this week, though, and we learned that Lena Horne and Mike Tyson celebrated today as their birthday, and there were other important events on this day, but they have slipped from my memory.

Zack reported collecting $154 for the CD / DVD player won by Gay last week, and that the money would go to the Hawthorne Conservatory in Jeff Smith's memory.

Alberto pleaded that all board members try to attend the July 5 meeting Last month required quorum needed to conduct business was not present.

President-Elect Will Dawes and Zack Thompson will be representing our club at the OI Convention in New Orleans next week. Alberto plans to attend the next District Meeting in about a month. George Ferrell passed around copies of several of our club events covered in "Speaking Out News", an African-American newspaper that is about to celebrate their 25th year of covering cultural affairs in Huntsville. Since they have shown great cooperation in publicizing our activities the club may want to help them celebrate by attending their banquet or advertising in their souvenir booklet. Ralph Caneer passed around proposed wording for a plaque to accompany our planned gift to the Hawthorne Conservatory, honoring Jeff Smith. Pres. Duarte awarded Fred Binner an Uncle Sam figure for his role in the patriotic program honoring returning veterans a few weeks ago. Alberto has tapes that anyone interested in learning Spanish can borrow. Duane Plank said we have a good slate of programs for July. Plan to bring many guests!

Connie Gipson introduced our speaker for today. Sam Sandlin has old Huntsville roots, two of whom, Ernest and Howard Sandlin have been members of our club. Sam is coordinator for the Flint River Watershed project, and this was his topic. The club thanks Connie for her good work as June program chairman. To top things off Sam drew her name for this week's attendance prize.
